Today 8 March is International Women’s Day – a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. The day is also a call to action for accelerating gender parity as evidenced by the The UN 2016 theme “Planet 50-50 by 2030: Step It Up for Gender Equality”.
Progress is being made but not quickly enough. A simply fabulous yet confronting article by Lizzie Dearden of the Independent “8 Charts that show why life is still more dangerous for Women” showed why, according to the World Economic Forum, it will take an estimated 118 years for the gender pay gap to close.
I have always acknowledged International Women’s Day and in another life was part of corporate luncheons and guest speaking to mark the occasion. There are many slogans, images, quotes, and provocations about IWD which understandably and appropriately has different meanings for different women. I do love green and purple – the traditional colours of IWD and have used them in some daily wraps, most recently when Michelle Payne won the Melboutrne Cup. But I decided today to go for a floral look which for me speaks to the nature, beauty and the potential of all women, reinvigorating me to step it up for gender equality.
