Happy Birthday Ma’am

Happy Birthday to You… Happy Birthday to You.. Happy Birthday Dear Monarch…Happy Birthday to You. In fact, the Queen celebrates two birthdays each year: her actual birthday on 21 April and her official birthday on a Saturday in June.

How can that be? How do you get a second birthday on a random June weekend? So off I trotted to the really proper website of the British Monarchy. which duly informed me official celebrations to mark Sovereigns’ birthday have often been held on a day other than the actual birthday, particularly when the actual birthday has not been in the summer. They noted that King Edward VII was born on 9 November, but his official birthday was marked throughout his reign in May or June when there was a greater likelihood of good weather for the Birthday Parade aka Trooping the Colour.

The Queen spends her 21 April birthday privately, but the occasion is marked publicly by gun salutes in central London at midday: a 41 gun salute in Hyde Park, a 21 gun salute in Windsor Great Park and a 62 gun salute at the Tower of London. That’s 124 salutes for Betty Windsor.

Her June birthday is when Her Majesty is joined by other members of the Royal Family at the Trooping the Colour  which moves between Buckingham Palace, The Mall and Horseguards’ Parade. That’s when you get to see all the Royals both the A Team and the B Team, rank their choice of head wear and wait with bated breath for a Prince George moment.

I reakon that the Queen was a striking young woman and she certainly doesn’t do too badly for 90.I’m loving this portrait of the Queen by Jelly Bean artist Roger Rocha which was commissioned for the 50th anniversary of the Queen’s reign (in a right royal segue look out for more tomorrow on Jelly Beans cos it’s Jelly Bean Day)

I’m wrapping  up a regal yellow look because I have always quite liked her in yellow, particularly the primrose yellow she wore at William’s wedding and recycled on a tour to Australia. As if you’d miss her, she tends to wear brightly-colored dresses, as well as large hats, to stand out from the crowd she draws. I’ve also added in a brooch embellishment because the Queen loves brooches. Well who doesn’t?
