First Anniversary

I am celebrating the first anniversary of the Daily Blog Wrap. So I am excited. Just not quite as excited as when I remembered that the traditional gift of a first anniversary is paper. It’s as if this was planned just for me. Seems its all about the strength that comes from the interlaced connection of the paper’s individual threads.

There’s also a contemporary or modern gift for first anniversaries – clocks. Well how cool is it that this symbol is all about the passing of time? Wrote Henry Van Dyke, “For those who love, time is eternity.”

In thinking about all things first anniversary I stumbled across a fabulous site called Paper Anniversary by Anna V who has created a whole business out of first anniversaries. Now that is what I call niche positioning on steroids. She said when she first began making paper jewellry, men from all around the world contacted her to design a special gift for their first wedding anniversary. She formally launched Paper Anniversary by Anna V in September 2013 with a mission to help newlyweds find meaningful, handcrafted first anniversary gifts.

Her blog Why is paper the traditional first anniversary gift provides six convincing reasons for those who love a good firs anniversary symbol:

  • Paper represents the blank page
  • Paper reminds us of the fragile and modest beginnings of marriage
  • Paper symbolises writing your future together
  • Paper symbolises the true interweaving of your lives
  • Paper is a reminder of natural growth
  • Paper is the eternal proclamation

Now to other first anniversary must knows: the first anniversary gemstone is gold jewelry, pearl, or peridot. The first anniversary colour is gold or yellow. The first anniversary flower is orange blossom or pansy. The pansy’s name comes from the French word pensée which means thought or remembrance for the recipient, while orange blossom is associated with purity, innocence, eternal love, marriage and fruitfulness, and fertility.

To celebrate the day, I shouted myself a little Jo Malone Orange Blossom Candle. Well- why not? It’s a gift everyone can share and I would do anything to have that beautiful cream and black signature wrapping. I also searched high and low for just the perfect first anniversary gift and settled on the customised writing paper – two first anniversary symbols in one go which are relatively easy to get right because orange blossom is so pretty and you can never have enough personalised writing notes. My research has shown that the traditional symbols for a second anniversary are cotton and china – just as well I have a whole year to think about that.
